The truck was left-hand drive, and the dealer had not mentioned certification. That deposit would have bought him a truck that could not legally enter Kenya.
That is the side of China's box truck export business that rarely makes it into catalog pages. A box truck is not just a box on a chassis. It is a set of choices that must match the destination.
In China, export box trucks commonly come in 4.2 m, 5.2 m, 6.8 m, 7.6 m and 9.6 m lengths. A 4.2 m unit on a light 4x2 chassis is often used for city delivery. A 6.8 m or 7.6 m truck on a medium chassis is more suitable for regional runs. Engine options vary by price and chassis: Yunnei, Quanchai, Weichai, Yuchai, Cummins. None of that matters if the steering wheel is on the wrong side or the emission standard is not accepted.
Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh generally require right-hand drive. Nigeria, Ghana, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and most of Latin America use left-hand drive. Certification is another gate. Nigeria has SONCAP. Kenya has PVoC. Tanzania has TBS. Saudi Arabia uses SABER/SASO. A cheap truck without the right certificate can sit at Apapa, Mombasa or Jeddah for weeks.
Shipping adds another layer. Small box trucks can sometimes fit into a container. Taller or longer units often move by flat rack or Ro-Ro. From Shandong, Qingdao is a common port; other suppliers use Shanghai, Tianjin or Guangzhou. Insurance, port charges and destination clearance should be settled before the truck leaves China.
